Bathing Beauty

Momma Post: As you can see, Ruby has no problem climbing over any obstacle, bathtubs included. Last Thursday I caught her hurdling the tub edge unscathed. Just a reminder that her abilities shouldn't be second guessed. This goes for the toilet, too, which so far hasn't sparked any interest. Ruby has been turning on the water with full understanding of the faucets, both upstairs and down. Amazing how we hear the water running, when out the corner of our eye we see a toddler slip into the loo. Recently both Matt and I have commented that this parenthood thing is truly a full-time job.

Ruby's teething this week. A third tooth on the bottom gum is causing couch biting and gnawing on wooden blocks. A tooth on the upper gum is also apparent, but hasn't broken through for almost six teeth total. Bedtime has been most affected by extended fussiness and periodic waking. We are changing her shirts each afternoon to address excessive drool as well. Matt insists that this behavior notes a high level of concentration. It reminds me of the story where Matt and his brother Mark drooled into the cookie dough while assisting Grandma Alice with the stiring.

Wild Kingdom

Momma Post: This week Ruby tried to convince us that she's outgrown her stroller, now she's a determined little walker. During the snow, Matt and Ruby toddled completely around a block, stopping for the occasional bite of snow. We want to encourage this freedom of movement, so Matt thought an afternoon at the Oregon Zoo was in order. As parents we're also finding that activities which tire her out, make our job a bit easier...what could be better than a safe place to wander and overstimulation by animal gazing. As our photos demonstrate, it is now much trickier to capture Ruby on film, due to her inability to stay still for the three seconds it takes for our digital camera to shoot.

Ruby has been to the zoo three other times, but on Saturday Ruby was noticeably interested in the animals, pointing, squealing and calling out all the birds by pinching her fingers together. The ASL sign for bird is pinching your pointer and thumb together near your mouth, imitating a beak. Ruby understands the pinching, but has modified the sign slightly by pinching and pointing. Ruby was thrilled with the penguins, calling them "ducks", which was a pretty good correlation I thought. The polar bears gave a good show with their frozen fish popsicles. Ruby also had her first taste of an Elephant Ear (fried dough covered in butter, cinnamon and sugar). I don't know if it's an Oregon thing, but I'm always amazing at how many people never have heard of Elephant Ears.

Other empowerment activities include Ruby discovering that she can take off both her shoes and socks. This new skill is repeated during every car ride. I understand how excited she must feel about having some control over her wardrobe, but personally I think she also likes to be barefoot. Tonight at Grandma Alice's she was a screaming banshee...yes, Ruby's found that her voice has several octaves. Maybe the Francois Monkeys (that slammed their bodies against the Plexiglas) at the Oregon zoo were behind the inspiration.

Jackson County Jaunt

Momma Post: We just returned from a trip to Southern Oregon inbetween the snow fall, which offered a picturesque drive down the powder sugar coated Willamette Valley. We stayed with my grandparents Jack and Martha and enjoyed the TLC they always provide. Ruby was completely won over by Grandma's fantastic toy box, especially the pink car that produced music/noise on demand (thank God we don't have this toy at home). This weekend completely "went to the dogs" in a positive sense. Ruby loved and couldn't get enough of Gracie (Gma/Gpa's Corgie) and Robbie (Uncle Tom's Rott/Shepard mix). Grandpa Doyle's friend Georgia brought over her Poodle named Molly and Ruby tried to make friends with her, too. We also visited with our college friends Ryan and Maisie and their boys Aidan and Dylan. Aidan is very social and great at sharing his toys. Dylan is very affectionate and a sweet, confident boy.

An exciting turn of eventa for me...Ruby said "mama" for the first time and repeated it throughout the weekend. I'm not sure if the meaning is understood, but it warms my heart regardless.

Daddy Post: As you can tell by the first picture, Georgia and her dog Molly revealed their true colors. Fortunately, Ruby escaped from this nefarious duo unscathed.

Snow Day!!!

Daddy Post: Ruby enjoyed her first "real" snow day today. She loved walking around and eating the snow off of her mittens. She also looked on with ambition at the other kids sledding down the local sled hill. Daddy might have to get a sled sooner than later.

Goodbye 2006, Hello 2007

Momma Post: Wow, what a year! So many transitions and milestones for our family. Matt and I continued along the learning curve in our crash course in parenthood. We cherished each moment with Ruby, our Christmas 2005 healthy baby girl, now a lanky toddler. Her lastest physical achievements include running and dancing. She has two front teeth (with a cute gap between that reminds me of my Grandma Beebe) and her hair is growing thicker. Her vocabulary includes the words (Dog, Cat, Duck, Dada, and Da (which means what's that?)) and sign language for the words("Bird", "More", "Eat", "Water", "Milk", "All Done", "Head", etc.). Ruby's a very affectionate gal, giving leg hugs and kisses to those within grasp, but still shies away from new faces. Ruby can also be a little demanding, know what she wants and when she wants it - like NOW. We're sympathetic to her communication frustration, but calmly talk her through the moment. Ruby's pretty fearless, except when in comes to the hair dyer. She's such a gift. Matt and I can't believe she's ours.

Other highlights to our year...Matt graduated from Lewis & Clark and started his own marriage and family counseling practice in the Hollywood District near our home. Matt continues to teach Philosophy at Portland Community College and for the next two terms will be temporarily working full time at the Sylvania Campus. Not mentioned earlier in this blog, but I moved from my planning job with the City of Hillsboro's Planning Department to a similar position with the City of Portland's Bureau of Development Services back in June. This change had mixed emotions for me, but has been wonderful for our family due that I gained over an hour at home each day and am a short bus/MAX ride home to Growing Seeds (Ruby's day care) if an emergency arises. I still have Thursdays at home with Ruby, which continues to be my weekly highlight. Personally, I also braved the streets this September/October and commuted to work via bicycle five or six times, before the rains came. Can't wait to dust off the bike this coming Spring.

We have a lot to be thankful for and much to anticipate in 2007.

Post-Holiday Fun Memories

Daddy Post: It's been quite a busy few weeks and we're happy to get back to "normal" around the house. We had a great time seeing our family over the break and Ruby enjoyed her 1st Christmas/Birthday as evidenced by the pictures. Our little messiah was a little trooper and did well getting acquainted with the family at large. She didn't even mind much when she fell face first on concrete while under dad's supervision. Fortunately, she's a quick healer. Happy new year to all. May 2007 continue to bring us all good health, fortune, and memories.
